American Music Festival in Winter Park, CO – July 7, 1990

The American Music Festival in Winter Park, Colorado, featuring Poco as the headliner was on July 7, 1990. Even though Richie Furay had, by that time, decided to go back to his ministry and not participate any further in the reunion tour he did participate in this concert as a special favor to Chuck Morris. Chuck Morris, the concert promoter for this festival, is Richie Furay’s long-time friend.

This was an outdoor concert set up at the Winter Park ski area. Other performers at this festival were:

  • Los Lobos
  • Leon Russell
  • Richard Thompson
  • Joe Ely

A trio of sisters called The Roches was listed on the multi-colored poster below, however, there is no indication they actually performed. Perhaps the poster had already been printed prior to The Roches cancelling their performance.

Just a few days earlier on July 3, Poco performed at the Taste of Minnesota Festival in St. Paul. Randy wore the same clothes to both of these shows. I guess he was going through his ‘pink’ period.

“They comprised the very first Poco line-up, and their Legacy album (released last fall on RCA Records), marks only the second time they’ve recorded together.”

“The quintet certainly has to be pleased with Legacy’s commercial showing as well. This past spring, it was certified gold for selling more than 500,000 copies — making it the second-best-selling Poco album, behind 1979’s Legend.”

“The skies cleared for the main attraction, Poco, but a mini-monsoon hit Winter Park fifteen minutes after the group’s last encore.”

“Young acted as the gracious host, and the excitement was regenerated when Furay and guitarist Jim Messina harmonized on ‘You’d Better Think Twice’ and bassist Randy Meisner showcased the voice that also landed him a spot in the Eagles.”
