Sometime in 1966 the Drivin’ Dynamics travelled to Denver to compete in a Battle of the Bands contest. They didn’t win, but Randy was noticed by another band called the Soul Survivors, a Denver band, and they asked Randy to join them. Randy did join the Soul Survivors and moved to Denver. After a brief stay in Denver the Soul Survivors moved on to California. There was already a band called the Soul Survivors in California, so the Denver Soul Survivors changed their name to the North Serrano Blues Band briefly and then changed it to The Poor. The Poor had some success and even appeared on a couple of TV shows.
