Poco performed at Chattanooga River Jam following the 10th annual River Raft Race on June 1, 1991. This show was part of Poco’s Legacy tour. A short video of the news coverage for this race is at the bottom of this page.
- Both Wet Willie and the Roadhouse Rockers took the stage at Ross’s Landing prior to Poco.
- After Poco played, the Outlaws came on stage.
Chattanooga radio station WSKZ-FM was a sponsor for this event, and Daniel Shelton of the station was the lucky guy to hang out with Poco. After Randy died, Daniel had a very nice comment about Randy and the band, which is under the photo below.
Thank you Daniel Shelton for answering my questions and with all your help with putting this page together. It is very much appreciated.

Jim Messina is wearing a Dudley Perkins Harley Davidson shirt from San Francisco. Randy was also known to have owned a Harley.
Randy is wearing a Music Fest 86 shirt, and when he was a part of Black Tie with Billy Swan and Jimmy Griffin, they performed at Music Fest in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, in June 1986.

Jim Messina, Randy Meisner, Daniel Shelton (KZ106), and Rusty Young
Daniel Shelton of WSKZ-FM (KZ106) radio had this to say about Poco when they were in Chattanooga:
“Many years ago… actually in 1991…I was privileged to hang with these guys for several days. It was amazing. To my left is the late Rusty Young of Poco…far left is Jim Messina of Loggins and Messina…and to my immediate right is the late Randy Meisner. I was fortunate enough to be able to have some great conversations with these legends but I really hit it off with Randy. He actually invited me to come visit him in California. He gave me his phone number and his address. I still have them. It was awesome standing in the shadows of greatness!!! We had a blast and I even got to jam with them.”
“Three nationally known recording groups from the 1970s will perform at the annual Tennessee River Raft Race at Ross’s Landing on Saturday, June 1, according to radio station WSKZ-FM, which helps organize the annual event.”
Notice that there are several typos in the next-to-last paragraph mentioning Poco, including the error that Timothy was there rather than Randy.

Chattanooga News-Free Press – May 10, 1991
“The five original members, including Rusty Young and George Grantham, reunited in 1989 for the successful album ‘Legacy’.“
“More than 100 raft entries and over 10,000 spectators are expected at the event. The Great Tennessee River Raft Race and River Jam was started 10 years ago by the Tennessee Jaycee Foundation to benefit Camp Discovery, a summer camp for the mentally and physically handicapped, and Orange Grove Center.”

What a great article! And, new pictures, too! Thank you, Diana!
Yeah, I like the pics before he started pulling his hair back.
I shared in the FB group and everyone was so happy to see how great he looks in this picture. I like his hair here too.
Nice one Diana. Thanks for this.
I was really happy to get this one.
Another meeting where someone met the members of the band and Randy stood out to them. That’s great that you made a connection with Daniel Shelton. Thanks, Diana.
He was really nice and helpful — a great personality to work in the radio business. I had some questions, and he answered them all.
