Rick Nelson and Randy Meisner at JD’s in Arizona with the Stone Canyon Band – Oct. 21-25, 1969

Rick Nelson and Randy Meisner appeared at JD’s in the Scottsdale area in Arizona and performed with the Stone Canyon Band for a week in October, 1969. JD’s was a very popular place to hear music in the area. It was a two-level club which offered country music on one floor and rock music on the other. Waylon Jennings was a regular there for awhile.

Just a few days after the week at JD’s, the Stone Canyon Band performed and recorded their shows at the Troubadour October 31 and November 1, 1969. The shows were recorded for a live album “In Concert The Troubadour, 1969” which was released in January 1970.

“There’s quite a surprise in store for Ricky Nelson fans out JD’s way. The one-time TV star and some-time singer is getting back into rock, the music which gave him his beginning. There’s even a longhaired bass player sharing the spotlight.”

“When Rick heard I was leaving, John Boylan, his producer asked if I wanted to put a band together with Rick. We got the band together and rehearsed at Rick’s house up in Mount Olympus, off of Laurel Canyon Blvd. It was so much fun.”

“When Meisner’s name came up, Rick said, ‘Boy, I’d like to have a guy like that in my band’.”

“Meisner rounded up two other players, Allen Kemp and Pat Shanahan, whom he’d worked with in a pre-Poco outfit called the Poor.”
